THE BACKSTORY

From the Forests of
Kalos to Every Region

Arthur Cedar grew up in the dense cedar forests of northern Kalos, where wild Pokémon roamed freely among the ancient trees. Unlike other children who dreamed of becoming Champions, young Arthur was fascinated by something else entirely — why Pokémon behaved the way they did, how they evolved, and what the wilderness could teach us about the bonds between humans and Pokémon.

He earned his Pokémon Research doctorate from the Lumiose University at 24, but refused the comfortable laboratory post that came with it. Instead, he laced up a pair of hiking boots, packed a backpack, and headed into the wild. That was twenty-seven years ago.

Cedar has since trekked through every region — from the icy caves of Sinnoh to the volcanic slopes of Alola, from the ancient ruins of Galar to the bamboo groves of Paldea. His field notes span over forty volumes, his Pokédex entries are among the most detailed ever recorded, and his lumberjack beard has become something of a legend in Pokémon research circles.

A Life in the Wild

AGE 8 — KALOS

First Encounter

A wild Chespin wandered into young Arthur's backyard. Instead of battling it, he sat very still for three hours, sketching it in a notebook. His parents found him there at dinner time, completely absorbed. The Chespin had fallen asleep next to him.

AGE 18 — JOHTO

First Expedition

Cedar's first solo expedition took him to the Ilex Forest in Johto. He spent an entire summer documenting Celebi sightings — or rather, the lack of them. His thesis, "Temporal Pokémon and the Limits of Observation," earned him his first academic prize.

AGE 24 — LUMIOSE

The Research Post He Turned Down

Offered a prestigious lab directorship at Lumiose University, Cedar famously declined with a letter that read: "The Pokémon worth studying are not in test tubes." He posted the letter from a trail-head in the Winding Woods and was not heard from for eight months.

AGE 31 — SINNOH

The Mt. Coronet Winter

Cedar spent an entire winter on Mt. Coronet studying the Legendary Pokémon Dialga and Palkia. He didn't see either of them. He did, however, compile the most comprehensive study of Geodude migration patterns ever published, which he considers one of his greatest achievements.
